First and foremost, I do not have any YEP experience at all. The closest I’ve been to a YEP project was an overseas community project back in my college days. I remember vaguely that I went with my teacher and fellow students to an orphanage in Prey Veng, Cambodia. Our main roles were to interact with the orphans and to conduct lessons (sports, English, Mathematics etc.). My aim of going for the project then was to boost my resume because it seemed prestigious to be selected. It just seemed like another project – In and Out.
So you may ask why did I choose to do it again this time?
You see, I have the time and the energy to carry out the project so why not. Additionally, I feel that it will be a very good learning opportunity (starting this blog etc.). I have been volunteering with people with special needs for some time and every experience is different. At the end of each activity, I always feel that I learnt so much more from them than they gained from me. Hence, my definition of YEP is an OPPORTUNITY to understand and improve myself through volunteering overseas.
