If it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a village to neglect one.

– Gerard Ee, Executive Director, Beyond Social Services

Many of us are familiar with the debate over “nature versus nurture” – and it probably will remain a controversy for many years to come – but how many of us will go the extra mile to empower and help others rise above disadvantageous circumstances?

Meet Beyond Social Services, our local beneficiary for Slipper Race 2016. It is dedicated to reducing delinquency among children and youth, with a focus on community development.

This is driven by the belief that community support can help disadvantaged and troubled youth to achieve greater social mobility.

Beyond Social Services was founded in response to the poor conditions caused by two destructive fires in 1960 and 1968. They’ve changed names and hands several times since, but their mission has remained the same: to serve the needs of families in less privileged communities in Singapore, and to equip them with the skills and resources needed for greater social mobility.

80% of proceeds from Project Happy Feet Slipper Race 2016 will go to Beyond Social Services’s Learning Is Fun & Exciting (LIFE) Program. This Program focuses on literacy, numeracy, and character education.
