Slipper Race raises S$83,000 for underprivileged children

SINGAPORE – More than 1,800 participants – including individuals, families and corporate groups – took part this morning in Singapore’s first ever Slipper Race for charity.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Defence and National Development, Dr Maliki Osman, flagged off the race and joined the three-kilometre walk at East Coast Park.

The Slipper Race raised about S$83,000 for the education of underprivileged children in Singapore, Cambodia and Vietnam.

The idea to walk in slippers was inspired by the sight of many students living in rural areas in Cambodia and Vietnam who have to walk three to five kilometres each day just to go to school, often barefooted.
