Corrinne May – Singapore’s very own International musician – recently handed a cheque of SGD5,000 to Project Happy Feet.
The SGD5,000, which came as a surprise, was the entire proceeds from the sale of VIP packages at the Rhythm with Nature Concert held on 30 June 2012, where Corrinne performed as part of the opening ceremony of Gardens by the Bay.
“It was great that Corrinne decided to give the proceeds to charity,” says Ms Alice Kent of Woohoo, which managed the sale of the packages.
So what prompted the singer-songwriter who wrote and performed ‘Song For Singapore’ for Singapore’s 2010 National Day to pick Project Happy Feet?
“I remember seeing the Project Happy Feet volunteers at St. Ignatius catholic church and they all struck me as being very passionate and sincere about what they were doing with Project Happy Feet,” says the Los Angeles-based musician.
“I’d also heard about Project Happy Feet from my good friend Pamela Ho who told me that Deborah and her team were doing really good work for the underprivileged kids and I’d read about the good work that they had done on the PHF website. So when it came time to think about a charity that would benefit from the VIP ticket sales of my concert at the Gardens by the Bay, I decided to donate it to Project Happy Feet.”
When asked what she thought about the many volunteers behind Project Happy Feet, she says: “I think that the people of PHF are doing remarkable work, seeking out the needs of the poor and helping to fulfil them.”
“I also love the fact that PHF is helping to empower the youth of today through their funding of education and training initiatives so that the underprivileged youth can live better lives and help to contribute to their societies,” says Corrinne, who won her first songwriting competition at 15, and later went on to pursue her passion in music.
“I think that being a mother has helped me to be more sensitive to the needs of others, especially those of the children and youth of our world. It truly moved me to read about the plight of some of these young people, who have such beautiful dreams to fulfil and who sometimes just need the basic necessities to get by. I hope to do more to help.”
Corrinne May launched her fifth album “Crooked Lines” in March 2012 after a hiatus of four years. When asked which song she would dedicate to all the volunteers of Project Happy Feet, she picked ‘When I Close My Eyes’.
“We all need a vision of a better future to inspire us to change the world one step at a time. The volunteers and supporters of PHF are driven by hope and by a strong desire to help their fellow men. They have that drive which helps them to envision a better future for those underprivileged children, and to reach out and do something about helping to bring that future to fruition.”
Project Happy Feet would like to thank Corrinne May for her contribution to our cause, and more importantly, for her inspiring words which encourage our hearts to do more.
