Don’t judge a book by its cover. Talk with it.
That was the tagline for “Heroes Seminar” organised by Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies as part of the World Issues- A Singapore Perspective module for more than 2,000 students. The seminar brought together some 66 people from all walks of life to interact with students in a ‘speed-dating’ style.
The concept was to turn each of the speakers into a ‘Living Book‘ to share anecdotes, experiences and stories. And what better place to hold it at the Lien Ying Chow Library?
Project Happy Feet is happy to be invited to speak at this seminar. Representing PHF were Grace Chia, Director and Co-founder of PHF; and Terence Quek, Director of Communication and Outreach.
Grace spoke on 8 December 2011 while Terence spoken on 16 January 2012. Both shared about PHF briefly and spent the rest of the time answering questions from the students. Topics included volunteering overseas; the impact of volunteerism – impacts and consequences; responsible volun-tourism; bureaucracy and volunteering; and more.
So what do some of the students think?
“Very useful and it inspired me to want to help out the less fortunate children all around the world.”
“Got me thinking about volunteer-tourism.”
“There are a lot of people need help in the world. We cannot help everyone, but it is better than we never help them so we need more groups like Project Happy Feet.”
“It was very insightful and made me think of how fortunate I am as compared to other children who are underprivileged.”
Project Happy Feet would like to thank Ngee Ann Polytechnic for this wonderful opportunity to share with its students and looks forward to returning to the Heroes Seminar.
